On Clothing and How to Apply Less is More

No, this little entry is NOT about stripping down. But, we will be applying the previous principles of reducing and optimizing your life. Unlike many of the previous entries, the skill I will seek to teach here has an immediate benefit – also on your surroundings.

We live in an age where the fashion industry is constantly renewing itself. Some say it does so in cycles – but whatever you do, do NOT bring back the 80’ies again – never ever. Why do we continue to buy, why does fashion change so often.

As I study literature, I never cease to be amazed by how much wisdom we have amassed, and how little we remember of it. Oscar Wilde put it wisely:

“Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months”

Good old Oscar dismissed fashion on the basis of aesthetics – a noble, and one would think, sufficient reason not to follow the trend of time. The fashion industry is NOT there for your viewing pleasure. But if you are not convinced, consider how the industry would survive – and as capitalism demands: grow revenue with a two digit percentage every year? If people decided to buy good quality cloth and shoes – how would they keep selling? No, the only way for the megabrands to survive is to keeps us citizens consuming. To do this, they need to instill in us the belief fashion is fungible, in a state of constant flux.

Art in the middle of 20th century became disgusting and provocative, instead of aesthetic. The clothing industry, a form of art itself, followed suit (no pun intended). And they were helped along nicely but the increasing laziness of the western world. We have been spoon fed with images of metro sexual males, women in jeans, trumpet pants and clothing done in low quality material produced in Chinese sweat shops. We gulped the ugliness down in big, steroid filled portions. As we lost our sense of personal style, we were forced to swallow the idea that individuality is achieved by buying mega-branded cloth. So that you can express your individuality by looking like everyone else and “following the trend”!

We filled our souls with this poison until we looked ourselves in the mirror and saw an androgynous  non-human. Have you ever wondered why the women in the fashion industry are so skinny and look like men from behind? Have you wondered why the men dress as metro sexuals - exposing their butts to the world and wearing colours normally reserved for women? Think about it. What sexuality does the men who work in the fashion industry have? Not a bad word about gays – many of them are the best styled men in the world. But, if you are heterosexual – the gay mans style may not be for you. And if you are female trying to make yourself irresistible to the opposite sex – being dressed by a gay man may not be a winning strategy.

The time has come to reclaims our  sense of style from the greedy hands of the fashion industry. I have gone through this process myself. My clothing is now cheaper, better looking, higher quality and cool. And the very best thing: It attracts the opposite sex consistently.

This path is not for everyone. I WILL be recommending tailored cloth and high quality fabrics. But, the monetary investment is smaller than you might think. The difficult part is not related to money at all. To become a classically dressed man with a sense of style – you need to think for yourself. THAT is the hard part – admitting that you look like shit and then taking the steps to remedy it requires courage. But it also builds confidence - so

How will you know that you got it right? When people spontaneously give you compliments on your style. Those compliments, while coming from outside yourself – is the only way to measure that you have expressed yourself through your clothing. Stay tuned…
